About “civil forfeiture,” that is.
Not to mention the IRAS.
Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required
On Thursday, in response to questions from The New York Times, the I.R.S. announced that it would curtail the practice, focusing instead on cases where the money is believed to have been acquired illegally or seizure is deemed justified by “exceptional circumstances.” (emphasis added-cb)
Yes, they just admitted to seizing money when no crime was even suspected. That they’ve been doing it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone with two neurons to rub together, but now they have enough disdain for “the people” and law to admit it.
Notice they aren’t promising to stop illegal seizures. They’ll just focus on other cases. Except in “exceptional cases”. In “exceptional cases” (i.e.- there’s a lot of money, or the administration in power doesn”t like someone) they’ll continue to steal money when no – other, by the nonaccused – crime is suspected.
Bad news for the Koch brothers. And Soros might consider covering his assets if the Republicans take over.*
* The institutional, systemic corruption of the IRS is not something new, inspired just by Obama. The IRS has always been the financial bully boy of the administration, regardless of party affiliation.
