The stupid; it burns.
Letter: Pro-gun argument painfully short of facts
Regarding the Oct. 8 letter, “No wonder gun owners do not trust politicians,” like most pro-gun rhetoric it was long on adjectives and hyperbole but painfully short on facts. Like when the writer said, “… the ludicrous and noxious SAFE Act.”
He didn’t say why, other than he didn’t like it. Half the mass shootings in America have happened after the assault weapons ban was allowed to expire in 1995. A mistake was allowed to occur. (emphasis added-cb)
In fact, the feddie AWB, which only became law on September 13, 1994, actually didn’t expire until ten years after that date: 2004. I have no idea where the ‘half the mass shootings’ statistic comes from; nothing I can find supports it.
Let’s look at a few more of Mr. Schultz’ painful ‘facts’.
“And “gun-free zones?” Oregon was an open carry state.”
Oregon does allow open carry. But state preemption only stops localities from making their own bans on licensed concealed carry. As for the college being a gun free zone: “Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited.” In other words, unless the legislature specifically authorizes carry on campus, Umpqua banned all weapons, albeit illegally.
” There have been other mass shootings in Virginia, Texas and Arizona. Not gun-free zones. “
I’m not even sure what his point was supposed to be. I’m not aware that anyone has claimed that mass shootings only happen in gun-free-zones. Certainly the original letter to which Schultz is responding didn’t say that. However, such magical violence-free locales do seem prone to shootings: Fort Hood, malls and more malls, movie theaters, Navy facilities… Heck, possibly 92% of recent mass shootings may have been in GFZs.
“New York’s last mass shooter was the firefighter killer in Webster before the SAFE act was passed. “
Not even close to true. And that’s not even counting the NYPD.
Oh well. Schultz doesn’t need real facts; I’m sure he has a bag full of feelz.
